August Floral Design Workshop: Hitomi Gilliam
Workshop at "The Art Exchange"
Continuing a Great PFIA Tradition with
Hitomi Gilliam
by William L. Schaffer
Alexander's Flower Shop, Philadelphia, PA
To me, the best part of being a member of the
Pennsylvania floral Industry Association is the opportunity
to meet new people and learn; and that is something that PFIA
excels in. In just the past tow years, PFIA workshops have
featured such notables as Gregor Lersch, Elz Hazenbrug, Frankie
Shelton and Tor Gunderson. this year was no exception. Once
again, under the summer woodlands near elk Mountain at The
Art Exchange in Uniondale, PA, the opportunity was served
up on a silver platter. August 28, 29 and 30 - three days
under the skilled tutelage of Hitomi Gilliam. AIFD was a dream
come true.
A workshop/retreat in the most wonderful outdoors
setting imaginable: a former mill converted into multiple
art studios. Deep woods, a lake and the most fascinating creek
running right down the side of the property surround The Art
Exchange on one side, a quaint Pennsylvania town the other.
Hitomi Gilliam who has inspired so many through her educational
dedication and her many floral Design Books added another
satisfied group to her repertoire of followers. Hitomi's open,
easygoing approach to teaching kept her students enthralled
and wanting for more.
Sixteen students were focused on Tension
in Nature while making use of the many natural surroundings
that were available to them. From minimalist creations to
the most elaborate in natural form design in the middle of
the creek (yep, that's right,, the middle of the creek) while
always keeping an eye on the Elements and Principles of Design.
For a relaxing, adventurous and educational getaway you couldn't
go wrong in setting your sights on any PFIA sponsored workshop
(especially at The Art Exchange).
