Welcome to the Pennsylvania Floral Industry Association. This
organization was formed in 1999 by the merger of Pennsylvania flower
growers and the Pennsylvania Florists Association. Members in our
organization are retail florists, flower and plant growers, floral
wholesalers, and associated businesses, educators and students. The
purpose of our organization is to assist in the continuous improvement
of the floriculture industry in Pennsylvania by means of six main
objectives:
| 1. |
Promoting the floriculture
industry in Pennsylvania.
Our goal is to raise awareness among the general public about how flowers and
plants can enhance their lives. Currently, a new marketing and plant promotion
program is being developed with Penn State, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture,
and other industry groups. This promotion will promote and market outdoor plants
specifically chosen for their optimal performance in our state. We also sponsor
an informative floral exhibit at the Pennsylvania Farm Show that attracts a lot
of interest. |
|
| 2. |
Encouraging research and extension services that
benefit the floriculture industry through member cooperation,
and/or financial support. We actively support research
at Penn State through the Department of Floriculture
and the Department of Plant Pathology. Recently, through
a series of grants, our association has supported the
construction of a new greenhouse at the Penn State Trial
Gardens in Landisville, PA. |
|
| 3. |
Promoting legislation that is beneficial to
the floriculture industry. We retain the services
of a professional lobbyist in Harrisburg to monitor
and participate in legislative activity that will directly
affect us. Members may be asked to assist by writing
letters to their local legislators on behalf of PFIA.
Suggestions can be made to the PFIA office on issues
that the lobbyist should be working on for the industry. |
|
| 4. |
Fostering flower production, care and arranging
as part of school instruction and to assist events
that promote the floral industry in Pennsylvania. Throughout
the year, and across the state, we hold seminars, tours,
and workshops designed to help our members stay up
with techniques. Our meetings are designed to help
our members be more effective and successful in the
operation of their businesses. And, for our growers
that hold PA Private Pesticide Applicators licenses,
we provide ample opportunities for recertification
credits. Our scholarship programs assist students studying
floriculture at the college level who will become the
future leaders of our industry.
|
|
| 5. |
Collecting, publishing, and making available to
members, information and/or services which may be beneficial
to the function and operations of the floral industry. Through
a close association with Penn State University and
many other sources, our newsletter is always a valuable
source of technical information with lots of useful
and timely information on all facets of our industry.
Our growing manuals on Bedding Plants and Geraniums
are well known as the best reference books available. |
|
| 6. |
And, by Cooperating with other associations with
similar purposes such s the Society of American Florists,
we actively promote, advance, and better the floral
industry across the nation. |
|
We are very proud of our programs and welcome your participation
as a member or your input as a consumer.
